Best practice tips for Zoom participants
Here are a few tips for making sure you and your classmates get the best virtual classroom experience!
Dos and Don'ts
Do:
- Test your audio and video before class if it's your first time using Zoom
- Use a headset and microphone to reduce background noise
- If you're talking, make sure the microphone is on and close enough to pick up your voice
- Mute your audio if you're not talking to reduce background noise for other participants
- Look at the camera! This might feel weird at first, but looking at the camera will have a similar effect to in-person eye contact and helps the audience feel like you're really talking to them
- Use gestures and mannerisms that you would typically use in person
Don't:
- Multitask -- act as you would in a real classroom and try your best to keep your attention on the screen
- Participate in activities like typing while your microphone is on -- it might sound noiseless, but your classmates will hear it!
Active Speaker and Gallery Views
You can select between Active Speaker (left photo) and Gallery views (right photo) using the button on the upper-right corner of the screen. Gallery view is recommended -- it allows for a more collaborative feel.
Display Your Name and Location
When you enter a classroom, please take a moment to ensure your name is visible to classmates. Here’s how: hover your cursor over your video image, click the ellipsis (…) icon, and click "Rename".
